INTRODUCTION

The Surveyors Academy was developed in 2022 in response to industry feedback and a desire to deliver quality training courses to industry in a way that supported organisations and their employees. In 2024 when Industry Training Alliance became a Registered Training Organisation the Surveyors Academy brand moved to its new home, delivering the same quality outcomes under the ITA brand.

DESCRIPTION

This qualification reflects the role of entry-level technicians who work under supervision to assist a surveying or spatial information services team.

Surveying and spatial information skills are applied in a range of industry contexts, including town planning, civil construction, mining, engineering, health, agriculture and defence.  

Survey technicians perform a range of duties using surveying tools and equipment, including total stations and global navigation satellite systems (GNSS), supported by data management skills.

Spatial information services technicians perform a range of duties using geospatial technologies and specialised software, supported by data management skills.

Cadastral surveying must be undertaken under the supervision of a registered surveyor. Relevant state and territory regulatory authorities should be consulted to confirm those requirements.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this qualification at the time of publication.

This qualification is suitable for an Australian traineeship pathway.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

There are no entry requirements for this qualification.

COURSE PACKAGING

To achieve this qualification, competency must be demonstrated in 15 units of competency consisting of:

  • CPPSSI3019 Produce basic plans of surveys

  • CPPSSI4030 Operate surveying equipment

  • CPPSSI4031 Perform surveying computations

  • CPPSSI4037 Produce computer-aided drawings

  • CPPSSI4040 Collect spatial data using a total station

  • CPPSSI4041 Set out site and building works

Group C: General  

  • CPPSSI3011 Produce basic maps

  • CPPSSI4038 Prepare and present GIS data

  • CPPSSI5060 Develop spreadsheets for spatial data

  • MEM30012A Apply mathematical techniques in a manufacturing engineering or related environment

  • PSPLND001 Investigate tenure and land use history

External Elective

  • BSBWHS414 Contribute to WHS risk management

COURSE OVERVIEW

  • Duration: Approximately 12-months

    Dates/Location: Involves In-Person, Online, and In-Field Training

    Cost: $12,000

    Entry Requirements:

    • Students must be working full time in the industry in a surveying related role, supported by their employer.

  • This course is nationally recognised, providing students with the fundamental skills to work in the surveying industry. It is a pre-requisite to the Diploma of Surveying and reflects the role of entry-level technicians who work under supervision to assist a surveying team.

  • Students will need access to a computer (with video and audio capabilities), Microsoft Office or equivalent, internet access, a scientific calculator, and a mobile device for practical evidence collection.

    This course requires that the student complete approximately 10-hours of self directed learning over and above the one day online training as well as their practical field work.
